Location and what to see

Getting there

Capital Suites Center sits on Rruga e Kavajës, on the second floor of the Raiffeisen Bank building, a few hundred metres west of Skanderbeg Square. Tirana International Airport Mother Teresa is about 11 km to the north-west, roughly 18 minutes by car when traffic is light. The cheapest way in is the airport bus, which runs between the terminal and a stop on Skanderbeg Square opposite the National History Museum, roughly hourly from midnight to 23:00; the fare is around 400 lek, about four euros, and tickets are bought from the driver. The ride takes about 35 minutes, and from that stop it is a level five-minute walk to the hotel. Taxis and the ride-hailing apps used locally cover the same route in twenty-five to thirty-five minutes; use the app meter or agree the fare before setting off.

What to see

Almost everything worth seeing in Tirana is within a fifteen-minute walk. The House of Leaves, the former secret-police surveillance headquarters and now one of the most affecting museums in the Balkans, is three minutes away on foot. The National Museum of History, under its huge mosaic facade, is four minutes, and Skanderbeg Square, the vast pedestrian heart of the capital, is five. The Clock Tower and the Et'hem Bey Mosque stand on the same square, Rinia Park is seven minutes south, and the National Gallery of Arts nine. Blloku, once closed to ordinary Albanians and now the city's café and nightlife quarter, is a fifteen-minute stroll to the south-east. Further out, set aside half a day for Bunk'Art 1, the enormous cold-war bunker museum below Mount Dajti, and ride the Dajti Ekspres cable car from the same area for the view back over the city. Spring and autumn are the pleasantest months for walking; July and August get hot.
